GENERAL PRE-OP INSTRUCTIONS:
The surgery center will contact you between 1pm – 3pm, the day before your procedure to give you the arrival time and any further instructions. If you do not receive the call by 3 pm please call us at 248-662-1500. We will not be able to give out arrival times prior to 1pm. YOUR PHYSICIAN’S OFFICE DOES NOT DETERMINE THE SCHEDULED SURGERY TIME. If you have been given a surgery time from the physician’s office or via email from your physician, please disregard and obtain your arrival time from Bone and Joint Surgery Center directly.
You must have a responsible adult here at the surgery center throughout your entire stay. Please remind your adult driver to answer all incoming calls while waiting for your discharge. Anticipate reserving half of the day at the center for your procedure. PERSONS UNDER THE AGE OF 18 MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT OR LEGAL GUARDIAN (MUST PROVE GUARDIANSHIP).
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery, this includes water, chewing gum or mints, as this may result in the cancellation of your surgical procedure. You may brush your teeth and gargle.
- If you are taking medications, you will be given instructions prior to your procedure. If you use inhalers, please bring them with you.
- All female patients may be required to provide a urine specimen upon arrival.
- Do not wear contact lenses, body lotions, makeup, nail polish, jewelry or body piercings.
- Wear comfortable and loose clothing.
- Please leave all valuables at home as the center is not responsible for lost articles.
- Do not shave your surgical site for at least two days prior to surgery.
- It is recommended that you shower with an antimicrobial wash such as dial soap for 2 days before your surgery and the morning of your procedure unless you have been given specific instructions by your surgeon.
- Please refer to your surgeon’s office for instructions on which prescriptions or over the counter medications/supplements that must be stopped prior to your surgery.
- You must abstain from alcohol, smoking and the use of recreational drugs 24 hours before your surgery.
If you become ill before your surgery date, please contact your surgeon’s office to inform them. If you become ill the evening/night before your surgery, please notify the surgery center 248-662-1500 in the morning before leaving your home.
AFTER YOUR SURGERY:
- Your surgeon will talk to your driver following your procedure by phone unless otherwise indicated. You and your driver will be given verbal and written discharge instructions by your nurse.
- Do not make any important decisions, drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after your surgery.
- Plan to have someone stay with you throughout the night.
- It is normal to feel drowsy at your discharge time, this feeling may last all day. Please plan to take it easy for a few days.
- It is not uncommon to experience a sore throat following your procedure. Warm salt water gargles and/or lozenges may provide relief.
- A nurse will be contacting you within 24 hours of your surgery except on weekends to check on your progress.
